Description:

Depicting a scene full of motion and activity, this work gives the viewer a sense of depth and space. Layering images and utilizing the margins for imagery, Miró challenges our notions of printmaking and the use of space in an image.

Created in 1975, this color etching and aquatint is from a folio of nine works published by Sala Gaspar, Barcelona. Printed by J. J. Torralba, Rubi (Barcelona) on Guarro paper with the publisher's watermark in the lower left, this work is signed by Miró in pencil in the lower right. Numbered 31/50 in the lower left, this work is in great condition with dark bold blacks and bright fresh colors.

Capturing the viewer's attention with a spoon-like translucent red form at the center of the image, the sense of depth is strengthened with the use of overlapping colors and extending the image to the edge of the sheet. With his signature linear stars in delicate black lines dispersed throughout the margin, the dark black interior rectangle evokes a powerful contrast to the exterior imagery. With bubbles and frothy white spaces meandering inside the center of the work, the accents of transparent color reveal to the viewer what is beneath and break up the stark black and white of the abstract imagery.
