Description:

Created in 1965, this clay sculpture is inscribed with ‘Edition Picasso’ and ‘Madoura Plein Feu’ stamps on the sculptural base with edition number 23/50 also incised on the base. Some natural kiln markings on the left and bottom of the base, which does not affect the image, overall in excellent condition.

This fantastic and wonderfully expressive figural sculpture in right profile is from the very small edition of only fifty. Picasso reduces the general form to its most basic and expressive state. This sense of simplicity is amplified by the crisp white surface of the natural white clay. The white clay, coupled with the simplified design merge to create an expressive sense of movement, as if the figure was captured while walking or dancing. This interest in simplicity, sometimes referenced as primitivism, reflects Picasso’s modern sensibility and interest in decorative reduction.

FREESTANDING SCULPTURE PLACEMENT:

This freestanding clay sculpture is best enjoyed in an environment where it is accessible from all sides. Pedestals are often an appropriate way to showcase larger ceramic pieces. In some instances, collectors have chosen to encase their freestanding sculptures under traditional museum bonnets. Museum bonnets are transparent acrylic cubes constructed with one open side that can be placed over the work as an added layer of protection from an unpredictable environment. If you are placing the work in an area where it might be touched or disturbed, a museum bonnet is an excellent conservation solution that can be custom made to fit over the sculpture. If you would like more information on freestanding sculptural placement and/or reinforcement, please feel free to contact us at any time.
