Description:

The warm, inviting imagery of Picasso’s grand œuvre of prints uses Baigneuse Debout Avec Une Cape as a stunning example of his innovation and creative skill in with the linocut print medium. Bold, thick applications of color combined with expressive use of line come together to create a charming and whimsical portrait evoking his Spanish roots while also integrating hints of life in the south of France. Here, we have our magnificent bather, with arms outstretched welcoming her audience. Her cape appears to flutter in the wind all around her, its large, curved lines and spiral ends instill a three-dimensionality and depth to the composition that seems to exist in its own landscape. The light, fluffy clouds in the distance add an element to the print’s already large scale, that it becomes easy to imagine ourselves lost in the world Picasso has so artfully created.

Created in 1963, this work was published by Edition Galerie Louise Leiris out of the signed and numbered edition of 50 on Vélin d’Arches paper (aside from 20 proofs reserved for the artist) . Hand signed by Pablo Picasso (1881 – 1973) in pencil in the lower right margin and numbered 12/50 in pencil in the lower left margin. This work is from the 2nd state impression featuring the crème and brown coloration throughout. It is from the first edition of this printed work featuring an additional date below the original (63.1.15) in dark brown: “63.1.18.”
