"Evangeline Booth" Signed Salvation Army Letter EVANGELINE BOOTH, (1865-1950) Social Reformer, Fourth General of The Salvation Army from 1934-1939. September 28, 1922, Typed Letter Signed in fountain pen ink, "Evangeline Booth," as Commander, Salvation Army National Headquarters stationery, New York City, two typed pages, 10.75" x 8.25", Very Fine. Addressed to Raymond Schindler of New York City, regarding his efforts to "picturize" and bring the Oberamagau (Germany) Passion Play to America. Letter with toning, and a fold through one letter of the truly impressive, huge signature. Evangeline Cory Booth (1865-1950) the seventh of eight children born to William Booth and Catherine Mumford of London, England, founders of The Christian Mission. The organization which became The Salvation Army in 1878. Booth was appointed as Field Commissioner throughout Great Britain in 1888. She served that post until 1891, when her father appointed her to train cadets in London. In 1904, she began serving as Territorial Commander of the USA, and became a US citizen. In 1934, she was elected General of The Salvation Army by the High Council and served until October 1939, when she retired to her home in upstate New York.
