Four Isaiah Thomas Signed Wooden Printing Blocks Illustrating Knights & Castles Each Signed "I T" c. 1770, Lot of 4 Woodblock Printing Plates, Signed "I T" for Isaiah Thomas, all illustrating Knights and Castles, Choice Very Fine. These marvelous, original, hand-engraved, 2" x 2.5" wooden printing plates, all depict knights with plumed helmets and castles, and are likely from the same book. All are signed by prominent Colonial Massachusetts printer, Isaiah Thomas, and may be from one of the historical works he printed, "Elements of General History" (1789 edition), Chronicles of the Kings of England by Nathan Ben Saddi (1795 edition), or his history of France. It is also possible these cuts were used in one of his newspapers or his "New England Almanac." Two of these blocks show mounted knights approaching a castle, 1 shows knights and ladies standing outside a castle, and the last shows two mounted knights fighting a beast, possibly a bear. All are in very nice condition without significant flaws, except for the last mentioned block, which has a 1" crack in the lower right corner. These are attractive and interesting Colonial era woodblocks. A little research should reveal in what publication they were used. Early American will accept payment by check or credit card.
