Post-Revolutionary War to Civil War
1800 Ohio American Western Military Receipt For "Boats"

November 21, 1800, American Military Expedition & Exploration Receipt, Signed by Lieutenant J. Whipple, Choice Extremely Fine.
This Manuscript Receipt measures 6" x 7.5" and was for four flat-bottomed boats for "transportation of the provisions of a detachment of men descending the Ohio under the command of Colo. David Strong." These boats were most likely being used to get supplies to the troops building the Cantonment Wilkinsonville, a short lived military post (1801-1805) that would briefly hold the bulk of US military strength, some 800 to 1000 men. The construction of the Fort was the brainchild of Alexander Hamilton, who intended to use its location to threaten French holdings to the west. However, with the Louisiana Purchase and Hamilton's death at the hands of Aaron Burr, the Fort was disbanded by order of President Jefferson. Unique.
