This is an imposing CDV photo of a tall, standing General John G. Foster in his uniform, on the standard gilt-ruled card; backstamp by Anthony.

John Gray Foster (1823-1874) was a Union general whose most distinguished services were in North and South Carolina. A postbellum expert in underwater demolition, he wrote the definitive treatise on the subject.
