Albemarle County Virginia 1848 Tax Bill for 12 Blacks 1848, Albemarle County (Virginia) Tax Bill for Joseph W. Campbell, Includes Tax on 12 Blacks , 2 Whites, and Clocks, Very Fine. This original, preprinted 4.25" x 7.5" form directs the Sheriff of Albemarle County to collect the annual tax on land, Blacks [slaves], horses, clocks and other categories, plus a "C. & P. Levy" on White adults and Blacks. Joseph Campbell's name is handwritten at the top, the amounts have been filled in by hand, and the document is signed at the bottom. Campbell is taxed for "2 Whites" and "12 Blacks." Aside from some wrinkling at the ends, a couple of pinholes, and some original arithmetic on the back, this document is in nice condition. A glimpse at life in pre-Civil War Virginia for Blacks and Whites. Early American will accept payment by check or credit card. ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
