Massachusetts Senators Charles Sumner and Henry Wilson CHARLES SUMNER, Civil War Era Massachusetts Senator, and HENRY WILSON, Vice President of the United States under Grant, and Senator from Massachusetts. This is an original, Autograph Album Sheet, measuring 8.5" x 5.5," Signed, "Charles Sumner, Mass." and "Henry Wilson, Mass." as U.S. Senators, Choice Extremely Fine. A bit ragged at the edge removed from the album, otherwise in great condition. Senator Sumner's autograph measures 3" and Wilson's signature is 3.5" in length. A rare sheet having the signatures of two such prominent and historic Americans who helped to shape much of the 19th century. Charles Sumner (1811-1874) received a severe beating in 1856 by cane wielding South Carolina Representative, Preston Brooks, on the floor of the United States Senate, over Sumner's anti-slavery remarks. After years of therapy, Sumner returned to the Senate to help lead the nation during the Civil War. Sumner, who specialized in foreign affairs, was a leading exponent of abolishing Slavery to weaken the Confederacy. Henry Wilson (1812–1875) was a Senator from Massachusetts and the 18th Vice President of the United States. He was a leading Republican who devoted his enormous energies to the destruction of what he considered the Slave Power, that is the conspiracy of slave owners to seize control of the federal government and block the progress of liberty. Wilson was elected Vice-President of the United States on the Republican ticket with President Ulysses S. Grant and served from March 4, 1873, until his death in the United States Capitol Building at Washington, DC. Early American will accept payment by check or credit card.
