Eliot (T.S., poet and playwright, 1888-1965) Typed Letter signed to Desmond Harmsworth,
1p. & envelope, 4to, on Faber and Faber headed notepaper, 17th June 1948, concerning various Indian works, "What you have put is rather a difficult problem. We have our own Bhagavad Gita and therefore should not be interested in another. As for the other books the more popular literature about Indian mysticism is rather a special line which most general publishers I think are a little shy of. There is a firm named Ryder, I believe, which rather specialises in this sort of thing and various kinds of theosophy. The complete translation of Upanishads would be a good thing if done by a highly competent scholar and translator. There is really no adequate full translation in English that I know of, Max Muller being decidedly out of date. But the complete translation would be an expensive work for a very limited public and really is the sort of thing that an University Press should undertake", folds.
