Lloyd George & Lord Northcliffe. Typed Letter signed to Cecil Harmsworth from Lord Nothcliffe, 1p., 8vo, The Times, 24th May 1916, in an effort to resolve the problems in Ireland after the Easter Rising, "L.G. asked me to ask you to remain in Ireland for three or four days, and he has been asked by the Government to try and effect a settlement of Irish affairs; and the Irish leaders have all been at him and seem willing to accept his ruling. One of the keys of the situation is Mr. Murphy, the owner of 'The Irish Independent' - a man for whom I have a profound admiration. I have telegraphed him asking him to come to London and I believe that if he and I got together we could settle this damnable business; but it needs to be settled now, otherwise the hot-heads will get to work , both in Ulster and elsewhere..."; and an A.L.s. from Murphy and some telegrams from Northcliffe etc., v.s., 1916, folds(sm. qty)***"Correspondence, telegrams etc relating to the efforts of Lloyd-George & N to solve the Irish problem just after the Easter Rebellion of 1916. I was in Dublin seeing people & trying to persuade W.M. Murphy to go over to London to see Ll.G & N. N regarded Murphy, owner of Independent & a man of most remarkable character & ability as the key to the Irish problem. CH 23/IX/1933." - Harmsworth.
