Harmsworth (Desmond, 1903-1990) a group of female figure studies, portrait heads, nudes and costumed figures, including 2 studies for Lady in a Mantilla, also 3 copies of an etched portrait of Dorothy Harmsworth, 23 pen and black ink, or charcoal drawings, on 22 sheets of various papers, v.s., also 4 etchings, a few signed or initialled, some hinged or taped into mounts(26)***Desmond Harmsworth initially moved to Paris to work on one of the family newspaper titles there, before falling under its artistic and literary spell and turning his attentions to publishing. But before the second world war he also spent several months in Tahiti, and the influences of both milieus are apparent. Perhaps this shared experience explains the comparisons with the figure-style of Gaugain, as Harmsworth himself denied having any particular admiration for the artist. .
