Montaigne (M. E. de) The Essayes, third edition of Florio's translation, fine engraved title by Martin Droeshout (trimmed, as is some pagination and the odd sidenote), minor stains, fine English restoration binding of black morocco, sides with double compartments almost filled with lavish tooling of stars, flowers, leafy foliage, etc, spine gilt in compartments, g.e, (minor rubbing, endpapers seem to be 19th Cent. replacements), early inscription H. Benet at foot of title (trimmed), later note (in mock Tudor style) that the book was from the collection of "Josiae Berners in vico vocato Fleetstreet" [STC 18043], folio, 1632.***Shares some of the characteristics of Howard Nixon's Geometrical Compartment binder, notably a "partiality for getting a great deal of tooling on the covers... and the absence of any space in the centre of the covers where the owner might have his arms blocked" (Oldaker Collection, p. 34). However we are not able certainly to identify any tools in common with the published bindings.. View Bloomsbury Auctions next auction.Similar lots up for auction |
