Waugh had met Acton at Oxford and had through him had been introduced to a new literary, social and sexual world. He admired and envied Acton's Old Etonian assurance and his glamorous and wealthy connections and threw himself headlong into a dissolute lifestyle. Acton and the flamboyant Brian Howard were the models for Anthony Blanche in Brideshead Revisited. Alastair Graham, who published this essay, was Waugh's lover at Oxford..
