[Livro dos Notários], Ds.s., manuscripts on vellum, 169pp. excluding blanks, in several hands, some writing indistinct, yellowed and soiled, loose or working loose, bound in seventeenth century blind stamped calf, brass centre piece of the Royal Arms of Portugal, and corner pieces of amyrilis spheres, lower cover lacks central and 2 lower corner pieces, covers detached, corners and edges worn, lacks spine, folio, 1505 onwards [sixteenth/seventeenth centuries] ***An outstanding collection of unpublished documents relating to Portugese notaries drawn up by the public notary of the City of Lisbon. Drawn up by Royal Order in 1505 in order to "avoid future demands and collusions", and comprising four centuries of the legal system in Portugal. Identifies the original title-holders and successors of the public notary, and consitutes the annals of the corporation, drawing up laws, regulations, provisions and agreements for four centuries. An immense source for the history of Portugese notaries, especially the legislative history of the reign of King Manuel I, especially in conjunction with the creation and validity of the Ordinances..
