Waugh (Evelyn) Brideshead Revisited, Revised Edition', signed presentation copy from the author, inscribed to [Father] Alfred Gilbey on front free endpaper, with A.L.s. from the Waugh to Gilbey loosely inserted, dust-jacket, frayed and torn with loss, 8vo, 1945.***Alfred Gilbey (1901-1998), Roman Catholic priest, chaplain for Fisher House, the Catholic Chaplaincy to the University of Cambridge. " His sense of humour, wit, and elegance completed a personality which made its mark in Cambridge during the thirty-three academic years and one term when he was in residence. The sight of Gilbey in the streets of Cambridge, attired in frock coat and broad-brimmed ecclesiastical hat, remains a memory of that period". DNB. The letter from Waugh is to confirm that he will give a lecture at Fisher House, and enquiring about the type of "member" he can expect to be addressing. He goes on to refer to one of his novels, probably this one.. ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
