In original printed paper folded portfolio with 20 illustrated numbered plates and 1 title leaf, 1 contents leaf and 1 colophon leaf (Each 410 x 620 mm). Plate 9 is reproduced on the verso of plate 7. Condition: extensive restoration to edges and folds of portfolio; light tanning to plate margins, slight creasing to upper right corners, plate 1 with 8mm hole at right margin not affecting image, small dampstaining to title, contents and colophon leaves. rare complete suite of symbolist landscapes. Bogaevskii was a celebrated landscape painter. He belonged to the Mir Iskusstva [World of Art] group and was a great admirer of Claude Lorrain and Andrea Montegna. He was best known for his lush romantic landscapes of an imaginary country that his friends called Bogaevia. The Symbolist poet Maximilian Voloshin was a great champion of his work. His other friends included the poets Marina Tsvetaeva and Osip Mandelshtam. The Soviets left him alone and he worked in relative obscurity in Theodosia.ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
