BRIK, Lilya Iurevna (1891-1978) and Abram SHTERNBERG (1894-1979) (photographer). Seated portrait photograph. Vintage gelatin silver-print (135 x 83 mm) on carte-postale paper, tipped onto original folding paper mount, the mount signed in brown ink by the photographer. Lilya Brik, the wife of the important Futurist writer and theorist Osip Brik, muse and lover to Mayakovsky and the subject for one of Rodchenko's most famous photographs was a key personality and artist who moved among the energetic milieu of the Soviet avant-garde. She also is known to have co-starred with Mayakovsky in a film he wrote which is now lost, as well as directing her own film in 1929. Shternberg's work was known for its dark and theatrical pictorialism and stands in contrast to Rodchenko's strong, clear images. Shternberg has captured the intensity of her dark eyes that Rodchenko also highlighted to such great effect on the cover of Mayakovsky's Pro Eto [About This] (1923).
