CHERNIKOV, Yakov Georgievich (1889-1951). Osnovy sovremennoi arkhitektury [Fundamentals of Contemporary Architecture]. Leningrad: Izdanie Leningradskogo Obshestva Arkhitektorov, 1931. Second edition enlarged. 96 pp. + 45 plates, 4to (300 x 210 mm). With 46 tipped in plates, 6 in color. Brown paper backed decorated boards. Condition: covers slightly rubbed at extremities, minor repairs to spine edges and corners; occasional slight offsetting from plates. One of 3150 copies. Chernikhov's influence on Soviet architecture is inestimable. Among the nearly hundred projects he personally designed or supervised were metal working factories, chemical plants, housing complexes, research institutes and schools. But his most enduring work has proven to be his books of "architectural fantasies." Drawing on Suprematist as well as Constuctivist elements, Chernikhov emphasized dynamic tension and organic forms in depicting his ambitious but unrealized structures.
