Illustrated by A. Melnikov. Just months after the October Revolution, Pravda the voice of the Communist Party declared the children's book "a mighty weapon" in the Bolshevik cause. The Soviet Union soon became the first country to nationalize its children's book industry. Under increasing pressure from the state, the best Russian writers and artists found sanctuary in children's books. These were beautifully designed and printed and issued in thousands and often ten of thousands of copies per title. They were literary read to pieces and are rare today in any condition.
