[Russia: late-19th century]. Decorated manuscript on paper, 177 leaves (324 x 210 mm.), 12 lines of text to a page, black ink, with accompanying musical notation in black and red ink above each line of text, numerous section headings in red, numerous decorative one and two-line initials in red, the first page with heading and 4 lines of text in red with full-page surround of semi-abstract organic decoration in black ink, polychrome watercolors and gilt, the facing page 8-line illuminated initial in black ink, polychrome watercolors and gilt, 11 other pages with decorative headpieces and 3 to 6-line iluminated initials in black ink and polychrome watercolors. Original red morocco over bevelled wooden boards, the covers elaborately panelled in gilt but oxidized, the spine in six compartments with semi-raised bands, lettered in the second compartment, the others panelled in gilt but oxidized, decorated turn-ins, gilt and gauffered edges. Condition: about 13 leaves detached or with splits at inner margins, 3 leaves with tears to lower margin, some spotting, some soiling, particularly to lower outer corners, lower outer corners of final 80 leaves rounded; binding scuffed, spine cracked and chipped, clasps defective, stitching weak.
