Extensively illustrated in color and black and white and includes 5 duotones, and 2 folding color inserts. Publisher's pale blue cloth, spine lettered in red, decorative colored paper labels on front and back boards, decorated endpapers. Condition: spine lightly faded, intermittent minor spotting to gutters. a profusely illustrated scholarly survey of the lubki or russian popular prints. These crudely engraved and often coarsely colored broadsheets were a true Russian folk art. Their subjects ran from folklore to political and religious commentary. Ivan Bilibin, Natalya Goncharova, Georgii Narbut and other twentieth-century artists found inspiration in these vulgar and vigorous prints. They were revived during the Russo-Japanese and many artists including Kazimir Malevich and Vladimir Mayakovsky produced satirical lubki during World War I.ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
