KANDINSKY, Wassily (1866-1944). V. V. Kandinskii. Tekst khudozhnika [V. V. Kandinsky. Text by the Artist]. Moscow: Izo NKP, 1918. 58 pp., 4to (305 x 210 mm). Frontispiece portrait. Numerous illustrations including a mounted duotone with tissue guard. Original tan wrappers with design by Kandinsky. Condition: backstrip detached, slight toning to margins of front and back endpapers. These reminiscences (Munich, June-October 1913; Moscow, September 1918) by the famous abstract painter reproduced 25 of his paintings (all but one in black and white) from 1902 to 1917. This fruitful period marked his transition from representational work to non-objective "improvisations" and "compositions." As a Russian national, Kandinsky was forced to leave Munich in 1914 and return home. He came into contact with Kazimir Malevich, Liubov Popova, Aleksandr Rodchenko, Vavara Stepanova, Vladimir Tatlin and other members of the Russian avant-garde. After the Revolution, Tatlin invited Kandinsky to participate in Narkompros, the People's Commissariat of Enlightenment, and Kandinsky published his reminiscences with IZO or Arts Section that Tatlin headed.
