KHACHATURYAN, Aram Ilich (1903-1978). Signed photograph of the great Armenian composer to Ilya Abromovich Shpilberg. Photograph, signed and inscribed November 1, 1967 (180 x 130 mm). Provenance: Ilya Abramovich Shpilberg. Khachatyryan, Sergei Prokofiev and Dmitri Shostakovich have been called the three "titans" of Soviet music. Khachatyryan's best-known pieces are the "Adagio of Spartacus and Phrygia" from the ballet Spartak [Spartacus] (1954) and the "Sabre Dance" from the ballet Gayane (1942) that are often used as background music in movies. For example, Stanley Kubrick used Gayane in 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968). [With:] A typed letter of recommendation from Khachaturyan on behalf of Shpilberg, January 18, 1969.
