LISSITZKY, El [Lazar Markovich] (1890-1941) (illustrator) and Ilya Lvovich SELVINSKII (1899-1968). Zapiski poeta [The Poet's Notes]. Moscow and Leningrad: Gikhl, 1928. 98 pp., 8vo (175 x 125 mm). 1 tipped in folding insert. Original photomontage wrappers designed by El Lissitzky. Condition: minor rubbing to wrapper edges and backstrip. Lissitzky was one of the principal innovators of modern typography and photomontage and created Suprematism with Malevich. He served as cultural ambassador to Germany where he met German Dadaists and taught at the Bauhaus. The poet Selvinskii was a leader of the Constructivist movement who was known to take a scientific approach to writing poetry. Originally a convert to Communism, he like so many of his contemporaries eventually grew disillusioned with the Soviets. One of 3000 copies. MoMA 750. ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
