PAVLOV, Ivan Petrovich (1849-1936). Lektsii. O Rabot glavnykh pischevaritelnykh zhelez [Lectures on the Function of the Principal Digestive Glands]. Moscow: "Priroda," 1917. 231 pp., 8vo (192 x 132 mm). Frontispiece portrait. Publisher's tan paper backed boards decoratively stamped in black. Condition: light rubbing to corners and spine extremities; joints neatly repaired. presentation copy to Vladimir Andreivich Opele. Second edition expanded by the author. Pavlov first delivered these lectures in l896 at the Institute of Experimental Medicine in St. Petersburg and they were published the following year. His studies on the digestive systems of dogs led to the objective science of behavior. He used the term "conditioned reflex" to explain how a dog could be taught to react consistently to the same stimulus. Pavlov received the Nobel Prize in Physiology in 1904 for research of the digestive system and the term "Pavlov's dog" entered the language to indicate one who reacts immediately rather than thinks something through.
