PETROV-VODKIN, Kuzma Sergeevich (1878-1939). Aoiya prikliucheniya Andriushi i Kati v vozdukh na zemlei i pod zemlei [AOIIA: The Adventures of Andriusha and Katia in the Sky, on Earth and Underground]. St. Petersburg: "Gryadyschii Den," 1914. 116 pp., 8vo (252 x 190 mm). Original decorated wrappers. Condition: wrappers thumbsoiled, tape repairs to inner margins on verso of front and back wrappers. rare early children's book by the great modern russian painter petrov-vodkin. Originally trained as an icon painter, Petrov-Vodkin later studied in art schools in St. Petersburg, Moscow and abroad. His paintings were controversial for adding the erotic to the style of icon paintings. His most famous works were "Dream" and "Bathing of a Red Horse". Although known mostly as a painter, he wrote several books later in life. This is an extremely rare example of a children's fairy tale book that Petrov-Vodkin wrote and illustrated in 1914. It tells a story of two friends Andriusha and Katia who fly away on a hot air balloon and land on a magical island called "Aoiya". The numerous illustrations are in Petrov-Vodknin's inimitable style. Not in MoMA. ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
