POPOVA, Liubov Sergeevna (1889-1924) (illustrator). Muzykalnaya nov [New Musicianship]. Moscow and Petrograd: Gosizdat, 20 October 1923. 56 pp., 4to (317 x 230 mm). Number 1 only known issue. Text in two columns, 1 small format errata slip tipped in at front. 2 illustrations in the text by P.S. Galadzhev. Edited by A.A. Sergeev. Original decorated wrappers, blocked and printed to a design by Popova, the lower wrapper in black, the upper wrapper printed in red and black. Condition: overall toning to text block; small tears to margins, the upper wrapper with a small chip out of the lower margin, some surface soiling. rare cover designed by the great russian avant-garde artist. One of 2000 copies. Includes letters from Tchaikovsky on pp. 51-55. Though her work was neglected for decades, Popova is now recognized as among the greatest Russian Constructivist artists. She exhibited with Tatlin and Malevich, designed the sets for two of Meierkhold's productions and through her textile designs was an enthusiastic advocate of the early Soviet notion of erasing the difference between the production of art and the art of production. She was one of the very few Constructivists who actually had first hand experience with factory work. The scope and variety of her work is impressive by any measure, even more so as she died of scarlet fever at age 35 (Gray, p. 204). Not in MoMA. ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
