RODCHENKO, Aleksandr Mikhailovich (1891-1956). Tsotsa. 1921. Photocollage and colored pencil (179 x 140 mm). On exhibition mount. Signed lower left and dated on verso. Design for the cover of the Futurist book by Aleksei Kruchenykh. Each copy of this hand-made book had an original collage cover designed by Rodchenko, every one different from the last. The book title and Kruchenykh's name are in Rodchenko's hand and this copy incorporates colored tissue paper as an element of the collage (Compton, 1993, p. 76). The photo affixed to this one is said to be a picture of Valentina Kulagina-Klutsis, also a famous photocollagist and the wife of artist Gustav Klutsis. She met Rodchenko while she was attending VKhUTEMAS where he taught. She herself would design the covers for several of Kruchenykh's books, including Zaumnyi iazyk [Transrational Language] and Iazyk Lenina [Lenin's Language]. Hellyer 250; Borokov pp.142 and 166.ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
