1929. Pencil and colored pencil on paper and mounted (345 x 260 mm). Number 8. With original swatches of cloth samples pinned to left margin. Signed in pencil lower right with costume measurement notes. Rodchenko's set design for Mayakovsky's utopian comedy imagined the future as a bronze and silver radiator emblazoned with the impossible date 12/IV/1979. The costume design represented here suggests an unlikely approximation of contemporary chic, an unintentional irony for which the Futurists would no doubt have had a mordant appreciation.
