RODCHENKO, Aleksandr Mikhailovich (1891-1956). Dobrolet. Moscow: Ivanovo voznesenk, [1923]. Lithograph in colors (695 x 510 mm). Backed on linen. Poster design by Rodchenko for Dobrolet, also known as the "Russian Society of the Volunteer Air Fleet." It was the nation's first major civil air organization. Beginning in 1923, Dobrolet was operating a regular air service along a 250 mile route between the cities of Moscow and Nizhnii Novgorod. The poster advertises the whole route as a two-and-a-half to three hour trip; a claim undoubtedly met with some skepticism at the time due to its unreliability. Intentionally or not, Rodchenko's images of spiraling and diving planes do not suggest confidence in the carrier either. Initially a partially privatized company, Dobrolet was predictably reconstituted in 1930 as a part of the state-run airline. By 1932 the now combined airline was renamed Aeroflot.ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
