Half-titles and titles printed in red and black. 21 lithographic maps or battle plans (printed in up to five colors, 7 double-page, 2 folding), 33 plates (including 20 portraits and 5 chromolithographs), numerous illustrations. Original purple cloth, covers and spine bordered with a continous red double fillet, upper cover and spines lettered in gilt, spines divided into five compartments by semi-raised bands in blind, red endpapers, cloth inner hinges, red edges. Condition: occasional spotting, some dampstaining to contents of one volume; old dampstaining to covers of one volume, spines discolored and soiled, some fading, spotting and discoloration to covers. very rare centennial record of regiments who served as the imperial body guards. Following the Prussian practice in the 1690s, Peter the Great introduced his Leib Guard (from the German Leib or body), military units who served as the personal body guards of the Emperor of Russia. The work is divided into two parts, with two unillustrated volumes reprinting significant documents and other records; and two other well-illustrated volumes on the history of the guards and their campaigns.
