SHERSHENEVICH, Vadim Gabrielevich (1893-1942). 2 x 2 = 5. Listy Imazhinista [2 x 2 = 5. Pages of an Imagist]. Moscow: "Imazhinisty," 1920. 48 pp., 8vo (182 x 132 mm). Original decorated wrappers designed by Boris Erdman. Condition: Imaginist wrappers lightly discolored, short teat to upper margin of title page with no loss of text; occasional colored pencil marginalia. treatise on the theory of imaginism as opposed to futurism. One of 6000 copies. The poet Shershenevich moved effortlessly from Symbolism to Futurism to Imaginism. By 1926 he gave up poetry to write plays, libretti and screenplays. He also translated Sophocles, Shakespeare, Baudelaire and Brecht. He dedicated this book to his fellow Imaginists Esenin, Erdman and Mariengof and distinguishes Imaginism from Futurism. Erdman's cover depicts a group of Imaginists playing cards; one man holds an ace of diamonds, which refers to the art collective Bubnovyi valet [The Ace of Diamonds], the leading exponents of avant-garde art in Russia.
