SHOSTAKOVICH, Dmitrii Dmitrievich (1906-1975). Pyataya simfoniya. Fifth Symphony.
[Moscow]: Muzgiz, 1947. 166 pp., folio (292 x 222 mm). Original white wrappers printed in black designed by Nikolai Timofeev. Condition: backstrip rubbed with chipping repaired; light thumbsoiling and dampstaining to wrappers. Provenance: Roman Altaev. signed presentation copy of the great russian composer's most popular symphony. One of 1000 copies. After the hostile reaction to his opera Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District and ballet The Limpid Stream in 1936, Shostakovich shelved his Fourth Symphony while it was in rehearsal and composed his more classical Fifth and redeemed himself with the Soviets at its 1937 premiere. It is still one of his most popular works. The inscription reads: "For dear Roman Altaev with best wishes from D. Shostakovich. September, 20, 1955." The first page also bears the conductor's signature.
