SHTERENBERG, David Petrovich (1881-1948) (illustrator) and E. EMDEN. Pesnya o Mame [Song about Mother]. Moscow: GIZ, 1930. 12 pp., 8vo (225 x 190 mm). Illustrated. Original color lithographed self-wrappers. Condition: light soiling and creasing to wrappers, some rubbing at fold. brilliantly illustrated by the famous avant-garde painter. Shterenberg was one of the Russian avant-garde artists who had the opportunity to study in Paris. There he met Anatoly Lunacharskii, who, once he became Commissar of Enlightment under Lenin, appointed Shterenberg Head of the Department of Fine Arts of the People's Commissariat of Enlightenment (NARKOMPROS). He taught at VKhUTEMAS and began illustrating children's books. His "Formalist" style went out when Socialist Realism came in. This song teaches children pride in mothers who labor at in factories. This book is a fine example of Shterenberg's combination of vivid colors and flat abstract composition.ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
