[STENBERG, Georgii (1900-1933) and Vladimir (1899-1982)]. Torgsin klub. Gouache on composition board (480 x 655 mm). Dated 28 December 1932 lower right. An unrealized architectural and interior design Constructivist project rendered as a stylized blueprint by the Stenberg brothers. The Torgsin Klub was envisioned as a comfortable place for foreigners to socialize with Russians. The title was taken from Torgsin stores, or special retail stores, which were established in larger Russian cities in the 1920s with the purpose of selling goods to foreigners. Here, we see a stairway entrance and bulletin board announcing "Today in the Club." The Stenbergs practiced in a range of media, initially active as Constructivist sculptors, subsequently as theater designers, architects, and draftmen as in this example.
