TELINGATER, Solomon Benediktovich (1903-1969) (illustrator) and Semen Isaakovich KIRSANOV (1906-1972). Slovo Predostavliaetsia Kirsanovu [The Word Belongs to Kirsanov].Moscow: GIZ, 1930. 84 pp., tall 4to (200 x 95 mm). Original wraparound cover with letterpress typographic design, lettering, and photomontage illustrations; letterpress text includes typographic design. Condition: glue residue on verso of front wrapper not affecting recto, minor repairs to backstrip; previous owner's ink inscription on first leaf. A stunning example of innovative Constructivist typographic design that ingeniously elaborates on the work of the leftist poet Kirsanov. The front wrapper suggests a felicitious combination of agit-prop and Dada elements via collage techniques. For one concrete poem, the type is laid out in a shape of a man. Telingater was a major Jewish Russian book and type designer who partnered with Lissitzky in 1928 on the design of the catalog for the All-Union Printing exhibition. He wrote influential books on typography and designed some of the most memorable books of the Soviet period. One of 3000 copies. MoMA 913; Hellyer 202.
