Tsiolovskii was a Russian rocket scientist, now known as the father of spaceflight. He was a mathematics teacher until he retired in 1920 and spent most of his life in a log house near Kaluga, where he wrote over 500 pamphlets on scientific topics. His early theories of human space travel and rocket propulsion eventually led to the development of the Soviet space programs. Working in relative obscurity, he was not recognized for his pioneering work in astronautics until late in life.
