Handwritten invoice on folded letter by Explorer, first GOP Presidential candidate and Civil War General, John C. Fremont, addressed to John Sutter of California Gold Rush fame. This ALS contains accounting for payment to Walla Walla Indians for cords of firewood, and to others for rations & sundries. This bill certified by Edward M. Kern 1st Lieut. (after whom Kern county, the Kern River & Kernville, CA were named). Interesting content. Roughly opened so that some figures missing at right. The letter was turned & re-used in 1851 (with U.S. # 11 franking) as a wrapper out of San Francisco and addressed to John Bidwell at Bidwell's Bar near Chico. Interesting piece of Americana & Western U.S. History.
