Major Martin was a resident of Wayne County, Indiana when he was appointed to the position of adjutant paymaster in the federal army by Governor Morton. He reported to Major Febagar, at St. Louis, and continued in that position until the end of the war. The first of the four books is a ledger of payments made by Major Martin, including lists of Companies and individual soldiers along with amounts paid. Although the record appears complete this is only the last part of a larger ledger book, front hinge broken, part of spine missing, heavy wear to boards. Book 2 is 'GENERAL ORDERS AFFECTING THE VOLUNTEER FORCE ADJUTANT GENERAL'S OFFICE 1862' (1863: Washington), bound in ¾ leather over slate green pebbled cloth boards, gold embossed label to front 'Maj. B.L. Martin, Add-Paymaster, U.S.A.'. Minor rubbing to extremities and boards. BOOK 3 is 'Military Records of Maj. Benj. L. Martin with Historic Reference' (1899: Washington). This is presentation copy with Certificate of Service for Major Martin bound in. Burgundy cloth, gilt edges, blind embossed artwork on front and gold embossed text front and spine, back cover re-attached and spine reinforced with red tape. BOOK 4 is small Bible, soft leather covers and leather clasp, small defect to inside front cover, otherwise fine.
