Psalmanaazaar, George, 'An historical and geographical description of Formosa', published by Daniel Brown and others, London 1704, containing preface of fourteen pages in vindication of the author from the reflections of a Jesuit lately come from China., in original leather boards, 8vo This extraordinary account of the people and topography of Formosa was published to great acclaim in 1704. The author, who remains unknown, derived his name from the Assyrain Emperor Shalmaneser. The account is entirely fictitcious though this was denied by Psalmanaazaar for a further ten years after the book's publication until absolute proof was presented of some of the discrepancies in the story.
