Autographs
Signed Samuel Francis Smith Poem SAMUEL FRANCIS SMITH, American Clergyman and Poet; Author of "America." Autographed Manuscript Poem Signed, "S.F. Smith," in brown ink on a small card, no date, no location, by sight 1.75" x 3", matted and framed to an overall dimension of 6.5" x 7.75", Choice Near Mint. A few lines from his hymn "America" (1832), otherwise known as "My Country 'Tis of Thee," in full: "My native country,--thee, Land of the noble, free, Thy name I love." Not examined out of frame, writing is crisp and expressive, but slightly faded. Smith (1808-1895) taught at Colby College and wrote numerous hymns and books in his life; none came close to achieving the fame of "America." In his 80s, Smith remarked, "If I had anticipated the future of it ["America"], doubtless I would have taken more pains with it." Early American will accept payment by check or credit card.
