War of 1812
Back Pay For A Soldier Who Died In War Of 1812 Undated, War of 1812 Manuscript Documents (2), Concerning Back Pay Due a Soldier Who Died in Service and Who is His Rightful Heir, Both Choice Extremely Fine. The first of these two handwritten documents, measuring 8.5" x 7," is a statement by two Selectmen of the town of Chichester, New Hampshire, that John Bickford, the deceased, was the lawful son of Joseph Bickford of Chichester. They have added a note, however, that William Bickford was John's oldest brother, perhaps suggesting that William should also be considered an heir to John Bickford's estate. The second document, measuring 6" x 7.5," indicates that Joseph Bickford, John's father, received his back pay, and signed this document to that effect. This document reads, in part: "The United States - To the Estate of John Bickford dec.Drs. - For Pay as a Private in Captain William L. Foster's Company, 11th Regt. Infantry from 1st Sept. 1814 to the 20th Feby. 1815, being 5 months 19 days at $8.00 per month ... (here follows some calculations) ... Received of Jacob Cutter, Asst. Dist. Paym(aster), ninety three dollars seventy four cents in full for the above, having signed duplicates. [signed] Joseph Bickford." The Joseph Bickford signature appears a bit shaky, suggesting that he may have been elderly or frail. Both documents are in excellent condition, the receipt being clean and bright, while the statement is lightly toned with age. The 11th Infantry Regiment was organized in New England and served the entire War of 1812 along the Canadian Border. These two original documents are a wonderful piece of Military History and Local New England History. (2 items). Early American will accept payment by check or credit card.
