c. 1876 Print "Fairbanks Scale Works, St. Johnsbury, Vt." c. 1876, Engraved Print, "Fairbanks Scale Works, St. Johnsbury, Vt." With Facsimiles of Medals Won by Their Scales, Extremely Fine. This bold, highly detailed, 15.75" x 23.75" engraved print, published around 1876, depicts the factory, office and other buildings of the well known Fairbanks Scale Works in Vermont. The scenes include the forge and brass foundry, store and office, annealing shop, carpenter and joiner shop, storehouse and shipping depot, the main entrance, and a general overview of the plant. Decorating the left and right ends of this print are depictions of numerous medals which had been awarded to the company for its products, spanning a period from 1851 to 1871. The bottom central panel shows the company's exhibit at the 1873 Vienna Exposition. The name of the engraver of this print, "Packard," appears in the grass in the right end of the General View panel. This print has a vertical mounting strip in the center of the blank back, indicating it was originally in an atlas or some similar oversize book. Fairbanks Scales were widely used during the California Gold Rush and the Yukon Gold Rush. The company was established in 1830 and is still in business today. This print is in nice condition, with 4 small repaired tears in the margins, not affecting the print itself. An important and very historic print which is directly related to the manufacturing of the 49er's California Gold Rush Era miner Scales. Early American will accept payment by check or credit card.
