U.S. Grant For Presidential Nominee January 1, 1868 Ulysses S. Grant-related Handbill, Fine or better. 10.25" x 7.5," scattered foxing and some minor fold splitting. 3 pages, set in script type, encouraging towns and committees, citizens and voters, to rally support for the Presidential nominee through a grassroots campaign of town meetings and gatherings. Signed in type by the Alexander T. Stewart (Chairman). Grant was officially nominated at the Republican National Convention in May 1868, but earlier meetings showed his popular support as a candidate "irrespective of party." This handbill sought to capitalize on Grant's popularity, thus ensuring the momentum required for the nomination. The campaign was an obvious success, not only for the nomination, but the Presidency, as well! Rare, the first we've ever seen or suspected.
