AN HISTORICAL LOUIS XV STYLE ORMOLU MOUNTED TULIPWOOD AND ROSEWOOD BOIS DE BOUT MARQUETRY COMMODE retailed by Hampton & Sons, Pall Mall East, Late 19th/early 20th century, of bombé form with conforming brèche d'Alep marble top above two drawers inlaid sans traverse with shaped reserves enclosing floral sprays centering acanthus cast handles flanking a reticulated cartouche modeled escutcheon, over a serpentine apron with similarly cast pendant raised on cabriole legs with scrolling foliate cast mounts continuing to molded rectangular chutes ending in pierced sabots of stylized rocaille and "C" scrolls. Height: 34 3/4", width: 56 1/2", depth: 25 3/4". Note: This commode was used at the coronation of Edward VII and Queen Consort Alexandra on August 9, 1902 Westminister Abbey. The fine craftsmanship of the marquetry and gilt bronze mounts points to a Parisian workshop. It was not uncommon for commpanies to purchase French styles of furniture for important commissions directly from the Paris trade and add their retail label as done here by Hampton & Sons.
