Bologna: Franciscus (Plato) de Benedictus, 31 August 1493. Chancery folio (280 x 205 mm). Translated from Greek by Angelus Politianus. Collation: aa-hh8 ii4 (aa1r blank, aa1v translator's letter to Andreas Magnanimus, aa2r translator's dedication to Innocent VIII, aa3r text, ii4v colophon). [68] ff. 35 lines, with printed marginalia. Type: 1:112R. 8-line title on aa3r printed in red. Spaces for initials with guide letters. Printer's woodcut device at end. Early 19th-century plain blue wrappers, manuscript title on spine, edges stained blue with early ms. lettering. Condition: Wormhole through most of text block, and a marginal wormhole affecting a few shoulder notes, marginal soiling to first few leaves; backstrip torn with one large hole. Provenance: Gustavo Camillo Galletti (inkstamp); Baron Horace Landau (bookplate). first authorized edition, the Galletti-Landau copy, of Poliziano's translation of Herodian's History, a partly first-hand account of Roman history, covering the years 180-238, from the death of Marcus Aurelius to the accession of Emperor Gordian III. The work is considered a valuable supplement to the histories of Dio Cassius. This is one of three incunable editions. The edition printed at Rome in June of the same year contains neither the marginal headings nor Poliziano's letter to Andrea Magnanimo. A broad-margined & unpressed copy.
