MONTESQUIEU, Charles de Secondat (1689 - 1755). The Spirit of the Laws.
London: J. Nourse and P. Vaillant, 1750. 2 volumes. 8vo (195 x 130 mm). Vol. II with 2 leaves of publisher's advertisements at end. Contemporary calf, covers ruled in gilt, spines with 6 raised bands, red lettering labels in gilt. Condition: some wear to joints, spine ends lightly chipped. Provenance: Armorial bookplate dated 1755. first edition in english of one of the most important works of political philosophy of the 18th century. Montesquieu's ideas profoundly influenced the American Founding Fathers and "the United States Constitution in particular is a lasting tribute to the principles he advocated" (Printing and the Mind of Man, 197).
