HEPPLEWHITE, Alice. The Cabinet-Maker and Upholsterer's Guide; or, Repository of Designs for Every Article of Household Furniture. London: I. and J. Taylor, 1789. Folio (350 x 230 mm). 127 engraved plates on 126 sheets, 2 pp. publisher's advertisements. Modern full brown morocco by Robert Oldack & Son, covers decoratively panelled in blind, spine stamped and lettered in gilt with red and green lettering labels, 6 raised bands. Condition: intermittent spotting, some light thumbsoiling. second edition. Very little is known about the cabinet maker George Hepplewhite. He had served his apprenticeship in Lancaster before opening his London shop and died in 1786 before the first publication of this book of his designs. Although no piece of furniture exists today that is known to have been made at his shop, he is forever remembered for the distinctive shield-back chairs and other elegant Adamesque designs of this neo-classical period. Hepplewhite's wife, Alice, arranged to have the designs engraved in 1787 and the scarce first edition was published in 1788. The book was enormously popular and was reprinted in 1789 and once more before 1800. Brunet III. 105.ImagesClick on thumbnails to see larger images:
