Amsterdam: Marc Michel Ray, 1761. 6 parts in 2 volumes. 12mo (151 x 100 mm). 12 plates by Gravelot, engraved vignettes to parts 2-5. Title pages to each volume, half-title to the 6th part only. Contemporary calf, spines tooled in gilt, red lettering labels, all edges stained red. Condition: some spotting and offsetting to endpapers; spines lightly rubbed. Provenance: J.L. (0wnership stamp) . true first edition of rousseau's greatest popular success, julie, ou la nouvelle héloise. This copy is bound with the separately issued Preface and Recueil d'Estampes pour La Nouvelle Héloise (which provided the 12 plates by Gravelot). The pagination of this edition is notable for having 312 pages in the 6th part, as opposed to the 293 pages in the heavily censored Paris edition. This copy also has the engraved vignettes, printed by the publisher, unbeknownst to Rousseau, who had preferred that more modest typographical ornaments be used. Rousseau's passionate story of love and social protest, which went through 72 editions in the 18th century, is one of the classics of French literature.
